What is it all about?

In 2004 the Australian government announced that 2007 would be officially known as the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, the first time a community-based organisation has received such an honour.

Centenary of Surf Life Saving

One hundred years ago, beachgoers who were concerned about the dangers of ‘surf bathing’ formed themselves into clubs in an attempt to make the surf safer for all. The surf lifesaver has been an Australia icon ever since.

Get involved!

During 2007 all Australians will have the opportunity to get involved in the Year of the Surf Lifesaver in a number of ways from simply attending an event, making a donation or play a more significant role by becoming a member of surf life saving club.

Celebrating 100 years of heroes

In 1907, representatives of the seven first surf clubs met to form the Surf Bathing Association of NSW, which went on to become Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).

Since then Surf Life Saving has grown in size and significance and is now Australia’s major water safety and rescue authority with more than 300 clubs and 110, 000 members.

2007 will be the official Year of the Surf Lifesaver (YSL) to recognise the centenary of Surf Life Saving in Australia.
